Eye screening, health education (awareness) and surgical eye camp /outreach in rural community (NSEC-COP)

      Blindness in Liberia is estimated at 1% (WHO 2002) with a population of 3.5 million where 90% of the blind live in rural and underserved communities. , (census 2008) . Cataract is the major cause of blindness contributing to 50% of the cases (17,500 cataract blindness) and up to 80% of these cases are either preventable or treatable. 

     New Sight Eye Center collaborates with community, non-governmental organizations (local and foreign), institution, individual (volunteers), National Eye Care Program and other stakeholders in the provision or implementation of rural community eye screening and eye health education (awareness). The outreach eye screening team conducts a need assessment in a potentially deprived and underserved community through participatory meetings with local leaders, District and County Health Officials prior to the eye screening activities to know their eye health needs. The primary purpose of the outreach or eye camp is to identify and treat people with treatable, avoidable and preventable blindness ( eg. Cataract, Pterygium, refractive error, Vitamin A Deficiency, Glaucoma, Trachoma) and improve their socio-economic lives by providing them the needed surgical, medical and refractive assistance.

     Those that cannot be managed at the outreach site are referred to our center for details management. New Sight Eye Center Community Outreach Team  includes volunteers (local and foreign), cataract surgeon, ophthalmologist, optometrist, refractionist, ophthalmic nurses, community member, community nurses, general nurses, photographer, driver and those interested in providing eye care service to rural community.      New Sight Eye Center will conduct at least two major surgical eye camps per year commencing 2011 in two of the 15 (fifteen) counties. This will means in five years 10 (10) major surgical eye camps will be conducted in 10 countries. While preparing to implement the surgical eye camp in 2011, a monthly eye screening is conducted in district deprived of eye care services. New Sight Eye Center is focusing more attention to counties or rural community deprived of eye health services.

     Services provided during outreach are: Health talk, free eye assessment and general body examination (registration, history, visual acuity, fundus examination, refraction, blood pressure test, intraocular pressure test, counseling, referral, etc) treatment and glasses at a minimal cost.
